Rheumatism is an acute disease with painful inflammation and swelling of one or more joints and often with endocarditis. In the initial stages pain is accompanied by fever. When it gets chronic, fever disappears. But the patient is unable to walk or move about. There is greater pain in the feet. It is maked by foul smelling sweat, thirst and headache. There are several types of Rheumatism. It includes stiffness of the chin, losing the sense of taste, stiffness of the neck, the lumber region and hands and feet and paralysis. When the joints become deformed and twisted, it is called Rheumatoid Arthritis. When you get up in the morning, you feel stiffness in the finger and hands.

Causes : It is caused by dirty teeth, anxiety, lack of peace, fear, grief, working or doing business against your wishes, getting drenched with water, feeling cold, syphilis, gonorrhea, over – indulgence in sex, eating stale and fried food, keeping awake during nights, restraining the natural pressures, getting hurt, excessive bleeding over – exertion, obesity, etc.

It is also caused by the deposition of uric acid in the joints, accumulation of toxins, T.B., germs of various diseases and the lack of minerals and vitamins in the diet.

Treatment : Fomentation, massage, sweating and steam- bath are beneficial in Rheumatism. It is sometimes accompanied by pneumonia. In such a case, treatment should be taken for pneumonia first. The diet should include blood – purifying food items. If the cause of rheumatism is gonorrhea, it should be treated first.
Do not take food items like rice which cause the morbid affection of the windy humour. The use of sprouts is beneficial in rheumatism.

Relief through Spiritualism : Instead of considering the disease a result of one’s bad  deeds, if one thinks positively and great relief. American scientists have found in their study that the patients afflicted with the incurable disease of rheumatoid arthritis get a relief from pain and get better if they take shelter in religion and spiritualism. Faith is the great healer.

The patients having positive thinking and faith in religion or spiritualism have been seen having effective control over their pain. The negative thinking to consider the disease a divine wrath aggravates the pain. Besides, the patients who have faith in the god and who love their life get support also.

Points to Remember : Usually a patient of rheumatism suffers from constipation. He should solve the problem of constipation. The use of castor oil is beneficial.

The patient should avoid oil, butter, clarified butter, fried food, etc. Similarly, lady’s finger, jack fruit and rice should not be taken. The use of wheat, millet, and barley is beneficial.

The use of very hot spices and chillies is not advisable. The medium hot spices like dried ginger, black pepper, cumin seeds, cloves and cinnamon are useful.

Lemon : Taking a lemon in cool or warm water as per the weather daily. You can add honey to it for taste, that is, you can take lemon water with honey.

The juice of green leafy vegetable like spinach, bathua and chaulai is harmful.

Walnuts, petha, bottle gourd, cucumber and melons are beneficial.

Wheat : The juice of wheat grass is very beneficial in this disease.

Patients of rheumatism can get relief by taking only juice of sour fruits and fruits and vegetable like bottle gourd and tomatoes.

Curd : It is harmful for patients of rheumatism. Only a little quantity of fresh sweet curd can be taken.

Meat and masoor daal is also harmful in rheumatism.

 Calcium, Phosphorous :  If the bones have affected by rheumatism, calcium and phosphorous – rich food should be taken.

 The use sprouts is also beneficial in rheumatism.

Tomato : Tomatoes are good for the patients of gout.

Mint leaves : Boil 50 fresh mint leaves or ½ tsp. of the powder of dry mint leaves in a glass of water. When it is reduced to half of its quantity strain it and drink it twice daily in the morning and evening. It is beneficial in gout pains.

Carrots : Its juice cures rheumatism and gout. The juice of carrots, cucumber and beetroot taken together in equal quantity are much more beneficial. If all the three vegetables are not available at the same time, take the juice of whatever is available.

Potato : Keep a little patato in each of the two pockets of your Pyjama or pants. It will protect from rheumatism. Eating potatoes is beneficial. Application of the paste of raw potatoes on the toe reduces gout pain. Also apply the paste on the painful spot.

Onion : (1) Onion are beneficial in neuropathy and rheumatism. In Greece, homeopathic doctors used to permit patients eat cooked onion.

(2) Mix onion juice and mustard oil in quantity. Massaging the painful parts with it proves to be beneficial.

Garlic : Daily massage with garlic oil is helpful. Clean and peel a big pod of garlic, cut it in two piece and boil in milk. If the Kheer prepared in the above manner is taken for six weeks, it can cure gout. Take it at bed – time. You can prepare this kheer by grinding the garlic and boiling it in milk. The quantity should be increased gradually. Sour food, sweets should be avoided. Ground garlic mixed with sesame oil is also beneficial for the patients of rheumatism. It is a tried formula.

Half tsp. of garlic juice mixed with a tsp. of hot clarified butter taken twice a day in the morning and evening is also beneficial in rheumatism.

Salt : (1) The patients of gout have increased levels of acid in the blood. Salt further increases these levels. It is, therefore not advisable for patients of gout to take salt.

(2) Foment the swollen parts with heated salt or sand tied in a piece of cloth.

Fenugreek : (1) It is a useful  vegetable for patients of rheumatism and gout. Roast fenugreek seeds in clarified butter, grind and make small laddoos. Eat them twice a day in the morning and evening for ten days. It is beneficial in rheumatism. Candy prepared with jiggery and fenugreek  seeds cures gout.

(2) Soak overnight four tsp. of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water. Strain in the morning and heat the water slightly and drink. It is quite beneficial. Eat the soaked, fenugreek seeds after sprouting them.

Ginger : Its juice mixed with clarified butter or honey is useful in rheumatism , backache and pain in the  thighs.

Boil 10 gms. of dried ginger powder in 100 ml. of water. Let it cool down, mix sugar or honey and drink it. It is a tried formula. Grind dried ginger and harad in equal quantity and take this powder twice daily with. It helps in joint pains.

Honey : Patients of rheumatism should take sufficient honey over a prolonged period. It is highly beneficial. It reduces pain in the joints.

Basil : Boil basil leaves in water and steam the painful parts of the body and also wash them with the hot water. Eat basil leaves with black pepper and cow’s clarified butter. It is beneficial in rheumatism.

Asgandh : Grind asgandh and loaf sugar in equal quantity and mix them. Take 3 tsp. of it every morning and evening with hot milk.

Sand : Heat some sand on a hot plate, put it in a piece of cloth and foment the painful parts.
Beet root : Its use provides relief from pain in the joints.

Long cucumber : If rheumatism is because of the presence of excess uric acid in the body, taking half glass each of mixed carrot and cucumber juice is beneficial. Its juice is also useful.

Kulthi : Boil 60 gms. of kulthi in 1 litre water. When it is reduced to one – fourth, mix a little rock salt and half tsp. of dried ginger powder and drink it. It is beneficial.

Sesame seeds : Massaging the body with sesame oil provides relief from rheumatism If body – ache has been caused by gout or windy humour, pound and grind 20 gms. dried ginger, 40  gms. walnut kernel and 160 gms. black sesame seeds and mix with 100 gms. of  jaggery. Take 20 gms., twice a day, with hot water.

Caraway seeds : (1) Applying the extract or oil of caraway seeds on the joints provides relief from pain. Boil caraway seeds in sesame oil to prepare the oil.

(2) Mix salt to taste with a tsp. of ground caraway seeds and take it with hot water in the morning on empty stomach.
