Hoarseness is caused by swelling in the vocal cords, too much of shouting, catarrh, coryza, excessive coughing, wounds in  the throat, etc. Cancer of the throat, hysteria and paralysis also make the throat hoarse. If the throat remains hoarse for a prolonged period, great care should be taken in treatment. Specialists should be consulted.   

  The following recipes remove disorders of the throat and make voice clear. Even if the patient is taking some other treatment, e.g., homeopathic or allopathic, the use of above  recipes will expedite relief and will not have any harmful effect. Also use the recipes mentioned in Catarrh and Coryza.

Clarified butter : Mix 1 tsp. each of clarified butter and sugar candy with 15 ground black pepper corns and lick in the morning and evening. It will provide relief from hoarseness. Do not take water for water for a few hours after licking it.

Amla : A tsp. of amla powder take with hot water clears the throat. The voice also becomes clear.

Salt : Gargling with hot saline water in the morning and evening brings relief.

Liquorice : Suck on a piece of liquorice or a little bit of the essence of liquorice at a time. Repeat it several times a day. It is quite beneficial.

Lemon : If the throat becomes hoarse, redness or swelling appears, squeeze a lemon in fresh or hot water and gargle thrice or four times a day.

Ginger : (1) Make a hole in a piece of ginger, fill it with asafoetida, wrap it in a piece of cloth and roast it. 
Then grind it and make pea -sized  globules. Suck on a globule eight times a day. It is useful in aphonia. Licking ginger juice with honey opens up the vocal cord.

(2)Half tsp. of ginger juice taken every half an hour cures hoarseness due to cold or eating sour things. Let the ginger juice remain in the throat for a few seconds. It clears the throat.

 Rose apple : Grind rose apple stones, mix with honey and make tablets. Suck on two tablets, for four times, daily. It clears the hoarseness and removes the heaviness of the voice. Taking it over a prolonged period rectifies the defects of voice. It is wonderfully beneficial for singers and those who have to speak a lot.

Garlic : Gargle with hot water with garlic juice added to it.

Asafoetida : If hoarseness occurs because of coryza or change of weather, gargle with hot water with ½ gm. asafoetida added to it. It will improve the voice.

Black pepper : (1)  Black pepper powder mixed with clarified butter taken with meals is beneficial in hoarseness.

 (2) Chew 12 black pepper corns with 12 batashas at bedtime. Do not follow it with cure hoarseness caused by cold and catarrh.

Honey : Gargling with a cup of water with honey in it clears the hoarseness.

Radish : Taking the powder of powder of radish seeds with hot water clears the throat.

 Turnip : Boil a turnip in water, strain the water, add sugar to it and drink it. It is beneficial.

Water : Boil water in a pan. When steam rises, draw it through your mouth into the throat. Also gargle with hot saline water. Foment the throat.

Caraway seeds : Boil caraway seeds and sugar and drink it. It clears the throat.

Betel leaf : Take a betel leaf with liquorice powder before bed – time and go to sleep. When you get up in the morning you will find that the throat has cleared.

Barley : Chew and swallow 25 grains of barley in the morning . It will clear the voice.
