Causes of Constipation
  1. Spoilt food habits : Feasts are common in India and the food at a feast is usually hot and tasty. Consequently, people overeat because it feels good. However, the more you eat, the hungrier you are and the more you sleep, the more sleepy you feel. Therefore, while enjoying a feast you should keep in mind that you are spoiling your own stomach even thought the food is free and tasteful. Not taking care of your stomach, eating hot and spicy food without appetite, over eating and taking cold drinks after meals, eating hastily without chewing the food properly and irregular food habits cause constipation. It is advisable to exercise self control while eating. There is a popular saying that “one should eat according to his own will and wear clothes of others choice”.

You should visit the toilet as many times as you eat, even if you don’t feel like it. If you follow this routine regularly, it will relieve you of constipation. Those who do not get a chance for physical labour should go for a walk and exercise regularly. You should get up before sunrise and relax and entertain yourself for sometime after meals. You should eat in a cheerful mood. Your should also cultivate the habit of evacuating the bowels regularly at the proper time. Once in a week, you should take only fruits and juices. It gives relief to intestines. If intellectuals develop an attitude for walking, yoga, exercise in routine, it could have a favorable impact \on them and they could be relieved for constipation.

One should eat food items that stimulate the bowel action in a natural way, for example sprouted beans, cooked pulses, boiled vegetables and leafy green vegetables regularly. Drink plenty of water. Spinach juice, white gourd melon juice, bel syrup, oranges, mausambi, lemon, mangoes, papaya and guava should be a part of the diet. These fruits naturally relieve constipation.

Lemon : (1) Lemon juice taken with warm water at night helps in clearing the bowels fully.
(2) 12 gms. Each of lemon juice and jiggery powder taken with a glass of water at night for a few days cures chronic constipation.

Orange : Orange juice taken with breakfast for a number of days creates a natural urge to evacuate the bowels. It also helps digestion.

Fenugreek leaves: Taken as a vegetable it relieves constipation. You can take two spoonfuls of fenugreek seeds powder with warm water in the morning and evening. This will keep the stomach in order, sharpen the appetite and you will never suffer from constipation.

Wheat : The juice of wheat grass relieves constipation.

Aniseed : Taking half a spoonful of aniseed powder with warm water provides to be useful.

Ginger : Mix spoonful beaten ginger in a cup of water. Boil it for 5 minutes. Drinking the filtered water relieves constipation. Al little cinnamon, dried ginger, cardamom seeds taken together is also useful.

Guava : Eating a guava gives freshness to the intestines and cures constipation. It should be eaten before meals because if taken after meals it causes constipation. Constipated persons should take guavas with breakfast. Chronic patients should take guava in the morning and evening. It will clear the bowels.

Papaya : ripe papaya is useful in curing constipation. When you feel constipated, take papaya before going to bed. The following morning your bowel will be cleared.

Dried dates : soak two dried dates in water in the morning and have them at night. Chew them properly. Take a frugal evening meal. You can also take two dried dates boiled in milk. It relieves constipation.

Onion: one raw onion taken with meals cures constipation.

Radish : Take it regularly with salt and black pepper  powder  with meals for two months. It will relieve constipation.

Rice : eating khichadi prepared with one part rice and two parts green gram boiled together and mixed with ghee relieves constipation.

Tamarind : Boil tamarind pulp in water and mix sugar. Its us ewill relieve flatulence and constipation.

Milk: Take 2 tsp. of gulkand made of roses or husk of isabgol with hot milk at night. It will relieve constipation.

Clarified butter : Take it with black pepper for three days. It softens the intestines and allows the stool to swell. Also take it with hot milk. It will also soften the stool and facilitate easing of the bowels.

Fig : If the constipation is chronic, eating figs will relieve it. Eat ripe figs or take five dried figs boiled in milk before going to bed.

Cauliflower : Taking half a glass of cauliflower juice at bedtime is quite helpful.

Melon: Eating ripe melon relieves constipation.

Cabbage : Regular use of cabbage leaves relieves even chronic constipation. It expels foreign elements and toxins form the body.

Bathua : (1) it strengthens the stomach and relieves constipation. Those suffering from constipation should use it regularly. Its regular use for a few weeks helps in relieving chronic constipation. Butter milk : it relieves constipation. Mix caraway seeds with it.

Neem : Make powder of dried neem blossom. Take a pinch of it daily at night with hot water. It is beneficial in constipation.

Soap : it you are not able to pass the stool at all, insert a piece of soap with a little oil or grease in the rectum. It will facilitate the passing of the stool.

Water melon ; Eating water melon regularly for a few days helps in relieving constipation.

Water : (1) Drinking hot water regularly, as hot as you can drink, after meals relieves constipation.
(2) Those suffering from constipation should keep sipping water along with meals. A glass of water should also be taken after getting up in the morning.

Sesame seeds :Mix equal quantities of jiggery with 62 gms. Of pounded sesame seeds and eat it. It will relieve constipation. Khichadi prepared with sesame seeds, rice and green gram also relieves constipation.
Castor oil : taking 2 tsp. of castor oil at bed time relieves constipation. You can take it mixed with milk also.
Honey : It is a piece of wet cloth on the stomach. Put a layer of wet clay on it. Wrap it with another piece of cloth. Overnite treatment treatment with wet clay will relieve constipation; regulate the stool and evacuation will be easy.
The use of chaulai, masoor ki daal, water melon, dry fruits, butter milk, etc also relieves constipation. Use these foods as much as possible. They will solve the problem of constipation. Treatment with these items is easy and beneficial.
One should not take medicines to treat constipation. If medicine is essential in some cases, treatment with homeopathic medicines will be specially helpful.
